L.A.M.D.A. (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) is a world-renowned drama school, based in London. Besides training the next generation of actors, LAMDA is also a world-renowned board for examinations in Speech and Drama. The aim of LAMDA qualifications is to develop self-presentation techniques, including voice, body language and confidence building - skills that are essential in any place of work.
At Wren’s, students between 9-21 years old can study the Public Speaking , Verse and Prose or Solo Acting Syllabus. Younger Learners (Little Wren’s) study introductory level.
Grades are taken 1-8 (Just like music or dance exams).
VALUE OF THE EXAMINATIONS
LAMDA exams are accredited by the government and as such are worth UCAS points. UCAS points are a system that is used alongside student school grades to go towards university and college applications. UCAS points are gained in grades 6, 7, and 8 of the LAMDA Exams.
They also count towards The Duke of Edinburgh Award. LAMDA classes can be used toward the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh awards. By attending regular classes, students can sign off their one hour a week skills activity log.
Many elements of the LAMDA preparations are similar to those of old-style elocution lessons. We teach students how to communicate with varied pronunciation and better diction, so they can communicate clearly with the widest number of English-speaking communities in the world.
Anyone who is interested in pursuing the Performing Arts as a career option should take LAMDA exams. The qualifications are a good addition to have on a CV when applying for courses. We have found that the vast majority of our students, who have gained Drama school places, have pursued LAMDA exams to grade 8 as training for Drama School auditions. Many use their LAMDA pieces as material to audition with.
